RTDNA and Google have teamed up to launch an election fact-checking training program targeted to broadcast and digital newsrooms, the organizations announced on Monday. The program is similar to a Google program I taught for seven years with another organization, but this new program focuses solely on fact-checking disinformation.
The trainings, which last one to three hours, can be taught in-person or over Zoom. Once you decide when, where and which trainer you want, you can fill out a form linked off the program’s web page. The program costs nothing; Google covers the trainers’ time and travel costs.
In my sessions, I cover updates to Google Fact Check Explorer, reverse image search, tools to detect deepfake video and audio, Pinpoint for document analysis as well as best practices for fact-checking. I also explore a few tools outside of Google’s suite that have been heavily tested by journalists.
With the influx of AI tools available that can create deepfakes, this program is a must for reporters, editors, producers, social media managers and others in your newsroom.
Take advantage of this free program. I you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at mikereilley1 [at} gmail [dot] com.

ONA/Microsoft AI in Journalism Initiative
There is still plenty of time to sign up for the Online News Association/Microsoft AI in Journalism Initiative training program. The trainings are free for ONA members and $25 for non-members. You can register for the training here.
The trainings, which last 60 to 90 minutes, will run each month with a few extra trainings and mini-labs sprinkled in. They will be recorded for those who miss the live Zoom trainings or want to replay them. I helped them design the trainings and will conduct several of them.

“Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we’ll augment our intelligence.” — Ginni Rometty, former CEO and executive chairman, IBM
