Training Video
I’m speaking at the BEA and NAB conferences in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. I’ve built a playlist of 17 training videos of useful #AI and other tools for broadcast journalists. You can read the playlist or just stream the videos below. Note that Vidiofy in the first video is evolving into a new tool, but the video has plenty of other AI video-creation tools featured.

Useful Mobile Apps
A couple of years ago I posted a series of newsletters of some of my favorite mobile apps for reporting, editing and shooting photos and videos. I’ve updated that list with a few more and added a few new gems. Enjoy …
An example of how to use the This! app. (Photo courtesy @WrigleyAerials
This! app: Made by Tinrocket, This! lets you layer text and directional arrows over the top of a photo. It works well with aerial shots or with foodie photos/recipes to point out ingredients. Another app, called Point Out, offers some different designs, but I like the slick look of This!
Hokusai: Dr. Amara Aguilar of USC does a wonderful job of demonstrating the app in this video. It’s an intuitive audio editor and makes life sooo much easier for producing audio clips on the fly.
VN video editor: Add text, location, music and edit clips easily in this intuitive interface. It’s useful for creating social videos on the fly.
Anchor: Audio can be visual with a little help from this app. Take an audio clip and turn it into an audiogram you can attach to a social media post or post to YouTube (pro tip: A LOT of podcast audio is heard on YouTube.)
Bonus Training Video: MidJourney Basics
This video covers MidJourney/Discord set-up and basics. I cover vector graphics and other ways to use MidJourney in this video.
Bad Data Viz/Good Data Viz
I love the Viz.wtf site, a graveyard for bad online and TV visualizations.
I share it with my UIC data journalism students every fall on the first day of class, which happens to be TODAY. I think there’s a lot to learn from bad visualizations. TedEd talks about how to spot misleading graphics in this video.
Free Election Tools Training Sessions
RTDNA and Google have teamed up to launch an election fact-checking training program targeted to broadcast and digital newsrooms, the organizations announced on Monday. The trainings, which last one to three hours, can be taught in-person or over Zoom. Once you decide when, where and which trainer you want, you can fill out a form linked off the program’s web page. The program costs nothing; Google covers the trainers’ time and travel costs.
ONA/Microsoft AI in Journalism Initiative
You can still sign up for the Online News Association/Microsoft AI in Journalism Initiative training program. The trainings are free for ONA members and $25 for non-members. You can register for the training here.
The trainings, which last 60 to 90 minutes, will run each month with a few extra trainings and mini-labs sprinkled in. They will be recorded for those who miss the live Zoom trainings or want to replay them. I helped them design the trainings and will conduct several of them.

Textbooks
The Journalist’s Toolbox
My new book, “The Journalist’s Toolbox A Guide to Digital Reporting and AI” will be published by Routledge in December. You can add the book to your wishlist and have the opportunity to pre-order it.
The book features tips, tricks and training videos on how to use digital tools, AI, mobile apps and more in your reporting. It makes for a great newsroom guide or textbook for reporting and digital courses. It’s available in “E-book Plus”, which embeds training videos and pop-ups directly into the book’s interface. It’s also available in paperback, hard cover and regular e-book format.
Data + Journalism
Samantha Sunne and I co-authored a textbook, “Data + Journalism” that’s available now on Routledge. (Order here). It’s an introductory- to intermediate-level guide to learning data storytelling from A to Z.
It features examples, interviews, links to tools and dozens of practical exercises to learn how to find, scrape, clean, visualize and write with data. We also explore ethics, transparency and basic math skills. We even offer a bonus chapter — Chapter 13 — on diversity and inclusion for free on our blog.
